POPULAR SKINCARE MYTHS – And The Truth Behind Them💄💋

YOU BREAKOUT FREQUENTLY BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT WASHING YOUR FACE ENOUGH:

MYTH: Washing your face is basic hygiene and important. Hence it can prevent acne and breakout that could otherwise have resulted from the bacteria on your face. However, don’t stress if you don’t get to properly cleanse your face once in a while. Because over cleansing or over washing can actually be bad for your skin and can strip it off its natural oils. Hence washing your face ten times a day won’t guarantee to keep breakouts at bay.

I WON’T BREAKOUT IF I USE AN ANTI-BACTERIAL SOAP/CLEANSER:

MYTH: Unfortunately there has been no scientific evidence to prove that antibacterial soaps are any better than regular soaps at keeping germs and bacteria away. These have more to do with brilliant advertising strategies than really keeping the germs away. In fact, anti bacterial soaps are thought to have the potential to make the bacteria antibiotic-resistant.

CHOCOLATE AND JUNK FOOD CAUSES ACNE

MYTH: Do you really think that the oil from your junk food is going to ooze out of your skin in the form of acne or breakout? Well not really! However, a little bump or two can pop up if you have had a diet rich in refined carbohydrates and sugars. Our bodies are made to respond to these (carbs & sugars) by producing more insulin which in turn stimulate the production of sebum (skin’s natural oil made by the skin itself). Hence, you may experience a breakout as a result of the excess sebum in your skin (and not the excess oil in your food).A direct link between high fat food and acne or breakouts is much debated upon, and there isn’t sufficient evidence to prove. But as with most things in life, moderation is the key and while there are many other reasons to avoid junk and unhealthy food, acne isn’t one of them. Having said that please don’t take this as an excuse to not adopt a healthy lifestyle.

A MOISTURIZER IS NOT AN EVERYDAY THING:

MYTH: You don’t need to moisturize your skin especially if you have normal skin, because you just don’t feel the need or you think it will clog your pores. However, remember that your skin is an organ, actually our largest organ and it needs hydration just like any other organ. It might otherwise produce oil (sebum) to to prevent itself from drying out, which might cause you to breakout. Therefore, if you’re one of those who have not been moisturizing your skin thinking that you can do without it, get yourself one today. Try choosing a lightweight moisturizer that is free of some of the chemicals that are bad for your skin

MAKEUP IS ALWAYS BAD FOR YOUR SKIN:

MYTH: What might surprise you is that some makeup might actually be good for your skin. Not all – but makeup that is packed with minerals and vitamins. And then when it comes to makeup, it all comes down to what your skin type is, what quality products you use and how properly you cleanse at the end of the day. Do your research and know your skin well enough to understand what its requirements are and makeup doesn’t have to be always bad. Just one of those skincare myths we are made to believe in.

ACNE IS ONLY A TEENAGE PROBLEM:

MYTH: Adult acne is also a fairly common thing that we all experience in our 20’s, 30’s and beyond. Therefore acne is a thing not just associated with the teens. Teenagers usually tend to get more frequent acne and breakouts because of the hormonal changes that come with their age.

YOU DON’T NEED TO USE ANTI-AGEING PRODUCTS UNTIL YOU’RE IN YOUR THIRTIES.

MYTH: You should actually incorporate an anti ageing product especially one rich in anti oxidants by the time you are in your early twenties. Because ageing is a natural process and the earlier we start taking care of our skin the better. However, if you’re still skeptical about the 20’s, then 30’s is an absolute age when your skin care regime shouldn’t go without having an anti-ageing incorporated in it.

YOU CAN GET RID OF CELLULITE PERMANENTLY:

MYTH: Being overweight isn’t the only cause of cellulite, as genes also has a role to play here. Hence much of what we hear that you can rid of cellulite by using a certain massage cream or wrapping or brushing your skin is not true. Because where much of its appearance can be improved with exercise, dry brushing, toning and moisturizing, you cannot get rid of it totally.

YOUR SKIN BECOMES IMMUNE TO SKINCARE INGREDIENTS IF YOU ALWAYS USE THE SAME PRODUCTS

MYTH: While its practically impossible for your skin to “get used” to certain ingredients and products, it might feel as such because your skin may become less sensitive to some ingredients. Or simply put, they lose their efficacy over time as your skin adjusts to those products. Dermatologists suggest that our skin can acclimatize to Vitamin A derivatives (Retinols for example). Or another factor could be you might have reached that your plateau for that specific product’s capacity for change.

THE MORE SPECIALTY PRODUCTS I USE, THE BETTER MY SKIN WILL LOOK

MYTH: Because that’s not true. What matters most is you knowing your skin well enough to apply the right products. Fewer products but ones that are meant for your skin type and skin issues will make your skin look better rather than applying ten to fifteen top branded products on your face which are not meant for your skin. Skincare products are made to target different skin issues keeping in mind specific skin types. Therefore, they will not work their charm if they are not meant for your skin type.

ALL I NEED TO DO FOR GREAT SKIN IS DRINK 8 GLASSES OF WATER A DAY

MYTH: Where this might be just half true, it is just one side of the picture. Hydration is an important aspect which cannot be ignored. But it is not the only thing that would warrant great looking skin. A healthy diet, exercise, good skincare regime and protecting your skin from the sun are some of the other important aspects that ensures great skin.

CONCLUSION:

Not all what you hear or read on is always true. Do your research well, understand your skin, its issues and product ingredients. Taking care of your skin is your responsibility. Do not give it away into the hands of a random post or some skincare myths just because it is popular! Think about it and enjoy you healthy looking skin!
